How We Started Goldie Kids — and Why We Built It Around Sleep
Every small brand starts with a problem that got personal. Goldie Kids is no different.
Like most new parents, we experienced the particular exhaustion that comes not just from broken sleep, but from the uncertainty of it. Was the baby too hot? Too cold? Was the room the right temperature? We found ourselves checking on them repeatedly, adjusting layers, second-guessing every choice. It wasn't just tiring — it felt like a problem that should have a better solution.
The Research Rabbit Hole
The more we looked into infant sleep and temperature, the clearer the picture became. Babies lose heat up to four times faster than adults because of their higher surface-area-to-mass ratio. Their thermoregulatory systems are immature. And the conventional solutions — TOG-rated synthetic sleep sacks, fleece pyjamas, layering charts — were essentially workarounds for a fabric limitation rather than solutions to the underlying problem.
The underlying problem was simple: most baby sleepwear is made from passive fabrics that hold a fixed amount of heat. They don't respond to changes in body temperature. Your baby's temperature fluctuates throughout the night. The mismatch between those two facts is where most sleep disruptions begin.
Why Wool. Why Canada.
Wool has been used for centuries to regulate body temperature in extreme climates — by explorers, farmers, athletes, and outdoor workers. The science behind why it works is well established: the crimped fibre structure creates a dynamic insulating layer that responds to changes in ambient and body temperature rather than maintaining a static thermal state.
For Canadian families specifically, this matters enormously. Our seasons are extreme. Our homes fluctuate. A sleep solution built for a temperate European climate isn't necessarily built for a Canadian winter followed by a humid Canadian summer. We wanted to make something specifically designed for how Canadians actually live — and made here, with Canadian materials and Canadian craftsmanship.
What We Make and Why
The All-Season Wool Sleep Sack was our first product, and it remains our bestseller. It's made from Canadian wool and designed to work year-round without requiring parents to swap between different TOG ratings seasonally. It grows with your baby through adjustable snaps, works in car seats and strollers, and has held up to thousands of washes across our customer community.
More recently, we introduced our Merino Wool Pyjamas — a natural next step for families who wanted to extend the benefits of thermoregulating fibres to the layer closest to their baby's skin. The pyjamas are designed to work alone as sleepwear or as a base layer under the sleep sack, giving parents a complete natural sleep system. They also function as outdoor base layers, which means they earn their keep beyond the nursery.
We're a small Canadian brand. Every product decision we make is deliberate, and every material choice is made with sleep science and family life in mind. We're grateful you found us.
